Korean Embassy donates 270 computers to the JAS

The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) has received a donation of 270 sets of desktop computers from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. Born out of an agreement that all computers were exclusively for donation purposes, the JAS is proud to accept the donation from the Korean private sector, through the Korean Government, on behalf of our farmers, their families and the community.

An official handing over ceremony for such an invaluable donation will be held on July 3, 2014, at the JAS Head Office, located at 67 Church Street, Kingston, commencing at 7:30 AM.

This initiative was supported by the Korean Government and National Information Society Agency (NIA), a Korean Government’s statutory agency. As the premier power in the world of Information Technology, Korea hopes to aid in the dispersion of information in rural districts and contribute to the development of Jamaica.

As such, the computers will be donated to farmers through the Association of Branch Societies (ABS) in all the fourteen (14) parishes of Jamaica, to selected organizations, schools, the Jamaica 4-H and community groups and will aid in the development of rural intranet cafés to service farmers in farming communities. They will also assist in the area of disaster risk management and production and enhance the marketing of agricultural crops through the Jamaica Agricultural Society Commercial Enterprise Limited (JASCEL).

“We wish to place on record the JAS’ appreciation for the commitment from the Korean Government and their ultimate donation of the 270 computers,” Senator Grant, President of the JAS stated. “We are confident that the donation of computers will impact positively on the quality of life for our farmers, their families and the community at large and help to build capacity in the sector.”

The JAS is the oldest farmers’ organization in Jamaica and has been serving the farmers and the rural citizenry for 119 years.
